Can I wear my hair up?
Sure, the Extensions will not be applied any lower than the base of your scalp (about even with the middle of your ears) and your hair under this point covers the extensions so you can wear it in pigtails, ponytails, french twists, french braids etc.
How long can my extensions be?
You can have any length you want up to about 26"-30". Any natural hair over this length is about 8 - 10 years old at the ends (it took the person that long to grow it for you) so it loses quality. Also, anything longer than this puts extra weight on your scalp which may lead to uneven pressure and damage to your own hair. The best looking hair extensions for average height women are usually around 22" or less. Our most popular length is 18" which comes approximately to the bra line.
Does it hurt? Will it cause my hair to come out?
You may feel some discomfort the first day or two so sleep on a soft pillow. After the second day, you should not feel any discomfort at all. You will know you have something on your head the first few days but after that you won't even feel that they are there (and no they will not cause your hair to come out unless they get pulled out!)
What is the best kind of hair to get for extensions?
The best hair is raw/virgin hair. This hair is very expensive! It is grown in places near the Arctic Circle (Russia, Poland). Genetic factors ensure that this hair is of the highest quality. It has been grown for generations by the same families specifically to be cut and sold. It has never been chemically treated in any way (blonde hair is grown on a blonde head) so it is much better suited to coloring and perming if necessary.
It is at it's best when left in the virgin state (choose colors and blend them to match your color exactly). Many extensionists don't use (or even know about) raw/virgin hair because it is very rare and extremely expensive. But if you can get it, and you can afford it - buy it!
The next best thing is Bohyme-Remy hair that remains soft and silky without matting (as long as it is properly maintained!)
Can I brush, curl blow dry and wash it?
You will need to brush it with a very soft bristle brush (boar hair works great). Other than that, you can curl it, straighten it, whatever, have fun with it! Though you can wash everyday you will find that your extensions hair will stay clean and curled for days. Wake up late? No problem-your hair still looks great! (This does not apply to all hair curl patterns-deep wave and very curly textures may get frizzy if you brush it out. You should allow this hair to air dry- use a wide tooth comb and scrunch). Please note hair will dry out sooner when using blow dryers and heat appliances. Air drying is a great idea!
Can I color or perm the extension hair?
Yes but its best to just buy the hair in the texture you prefer it in. Because the hair has been processed and sterilized we do not advise putting it through any more chemical treatments as it can easily be ruined. If you try to color it, it might not come out the exact shade you're looking for but if you still decide to dye it, its best to use a semi permanent color or color conditioner and not peroxide.
What about coloring my own hair?
You or your stylist may definitely color your own hair. Just color the area of hair that has been left out of the extensions. Be careful not to get color on the extensions hair as it grabs color really quickly.
What types of products should I use?
Moisture is the most important thing. Do not use products for oily hair or strippers that take out chlorine/product build up as these dry the hair out. Use styling products that are zero or low alcohol- products for dry hair are the best. Personally, I get the large bottles of Garnier Fructis shampoo and conditioner from Costco and these work great! Spray in conditioners and glossifiers are great too.
Can I swim and go in the ocean?
You may go swimming but its best to wash hair right after swimming. If you get salt water in your hair it will tangle so make sure you braid it before going in. Add a spray in conditioner after swimming.
Will anyone know I am wearing them?
Other than those close to you who will notice the sudden change, no one should be able to tell. (Choosing the right color and curl pattern is important).
Can I just add highlights?
Yes! This is a great way to add color without using harsh chemicals that may damage your own hair. With extensions, no harmful dyes or solutions are used and you can either opt for subtle highlights and lowlights or even bold neons, reds, blacks, blues, yellows, pinks, and greens.
Will my scalp still be able to breathe naturally with extensions?
Yes, our extensions are attached to strands of your hair not the scalp.
How long will it take to add extensions?
A full head of strand by strand locs usually take about 2 hours or so. We will fully advise you of the time involved when you book your initial consultation.
Will my new hair feel heavy?
At first you will definitely notice the extra hair but you'll be surprised at how quickly you get used to having a head full of gorgeous hair.
Will extensions damage my hair?
The loc method is the least damaging of all the hair extensions systems that are out there today. The locs are lined with silicone to protect the hair shaft and cause minimal damage. This is comparable to anydamage that comes with putting the hair up in a ponytail, regular brushing, etc. Since I have been wearing "loc" hair extensions, my own hair is in the best shape its ever been in. It has grown long and healthy since I only have to wash and style it every 3 days or so.
How long will my extension hair last?
With proper care and maintenance your extension hair could last until the individual pieces have thinned out and need replacing. Typically, this takes about a year. Since we use only Bohyme Remy hair, it is not necessary to change the hair out every couple of months like some other hair extensionists recommend. One of our clients has had her extensions in for over three years and they still look great-we have only replaced the pieces that have thinned out during this time.
How will I know when it's time for maintenance or replacement?
When the locs become loose and/or grow out during the normal growth process of your
own hair, usually about 4 weeks, then its time to get them tightened up.
Will I be able to go through the metal detectors at airports without setting the alarm off?
Yes you can breeze right through. The locs will not set off the metal detectors.
